Repeating Mexican vector pattern Inkscape Tutorial

In this tutorial learn how to create a seamless repeating vector pattern in Inkscape. We will therefore use this Mexican vector pattern for this example.

Repeating Mexican vector pattern: Document set-up

 First of all go to document properties by pressing ctrl + shift + D. (File-Document properties). Additionally choose 1000 by 1000 px. Furthermore leave the border on.

Next we also need to set the preferences. Press ctrl + shift + P to get the preferences dialogue box to open. Furthermore choose Behaviour-Steps. Choose 1000 px which is also the same size of our document. As a result moving the right arrow key will result in moving the object direct parallel to the duplicated object.

Finally open the align & distribute tab. Choose PAGE.

Repeating Mexican vector pattern: Moving the pattern pieces

First of all select the Mexican skull vector. Secondly move it to the center left of the document and line it up as you see fit. Also center the skull vector on the horizontal axis. When satisfied with the position also duplicate the vector. With the duplicated vector selected also press the right arrow key on your keyboard. As a result the object will move exactly 1000px. Additionally duplicate this vector. With this duplicate copy selected press the up arrow key. Finally duplicate the vector and after that press the left arrow key.

 

Repeating Mexican vector pattern: Clipping the pattern

 First of all select the square tool and drag out a square that is 1000 x 1000 px. Secondly enter the square to the page horizontally and vertically. Additionally select all objects including the square. Select Object-Clip-Set. Finally if you would like a background then create another square consequently colour it and also send it to the bottom.

Select everything an also group it together. After that duplicate it. Press the right arrow key. Duplicate it, press the down arrow key. You should certainly have a cool seamless repeating pattern.
